The Psilocybe Genus
The Psilocybe genus is composed of over 200 species of tryptamine synthesizing mushrooms. The 4 most prevalent of these are Azurescens, Semilanceata, Cubensis, and Cyanescens. however there are hundreds of species included in the genus. All species of Psilocybe mushroom are visually differing, and contain varying levels of psychoactive compounds (primarily psilocybin, psilocin, baeocystin and norbaeocystin). Different species also produce subtly varied psychotropic effects. Some of these mind altering effects include euphoria, altered sense of time, altered thought process, sensory enhancement & synesthesia (mixing of the 5 senses), spiritual or mystical experiences, and out of body experiences.
It is not scientifically clear why mushrooms of this genus produce psychoactive compounds, with the dominant theory relating it to a fungal defence mechanism, as studies have shown that insect appetites are reduced in the presence of psilocybin. Members of the Psilocybe genus all posses a gilled pileus (cap), a distinct gelatinous veil separating the pileus and stipe (stem or stalk), and bruise blue when handled or damaged, due to the increased oxidization of psilocin around the site of impact.
